It it's Weird, You'll Find it in Austin In 2000, Austin Community College librarian Red Wassenich called KOOP Radio's The Lounge Show to donate money. When the radio host asked why he contributed, Wassenich replied, "I don't know. It helps keep Austin weird." A slogan was born, and Austin's international reputation for being weird, zany, and slightly off-kilter was established. The phrase spread, and local businesses noticed and urged shoppers to "buy local."
