It it's Weird, You'll Find it in Austin

In 2000, Austin Community College librarian Red Wassenich called KOOP Radio's The Lounge Show to donate money. When the radio host asked why he contributed, Wassenich replied, "I don't know. It helps keep Austin weird."

A slogan was born, and Austin's international reputation for being weird, zany, and slightly off-kilter was established.

The phrase spread, and local businesses noticed and urged shoppers to "buy local." Since then, over 400,000 bumper stickers reading "Keep Austin Weird" and the tagline "Support Local Businesses"  have been sold.

Only in Austin can you find Chicken Shit Bingo at Ginny's Little Longhorn Saloon; the Cathedral of Junk constructed in a South Austin yard; Museum of the Weird; and 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerging from the Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge at dusk.

I couldn't catch Vince at a convenient time to peruse his Cathedral of Junk, but I did make it to the Museum of the Weird.

Loved the business names nearby: Voodoo Room, Coyote Ugly Saloon, and Wanderlust Wine Company.

And then there is Peckerheads, since March 2007, known for its signature drink, the giant mason jar long island iced tea. (Formerly my go-to drink after softball games.)

After a wonderful classic breakfast at the Paper Boy (formerly 2 food trucks turned brick-and-mortar restaurant), the thought of consuming the cholesterol-laden chicken + biscuit + gravy inspired me to hike to the
Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge to explore the area of the Mexican bats.
